General Library Policies

Jefferson College Library follows local, state, and federal laws, Board and Administrative College Policies and Procedures, and the standards of  American Library Association and the Association of College and Research Libraries  to guide the policies, practices, and procedures in the library. 

Policies serve many functions: they help define values, create priorities, and establish clear expectations for equitable delivery of library services. Jefferson College Library's policies reflect the Mission, Vision, and Values of Jefferson College, the Mission of the Library, and established professional best practices for academic libraries.

Vision, Mission, Values, Objectives

Vision

Jefferson College Library recognizes that educated citizens who have free and open access to information are vital to the continued health of our democracy. We support the American Library Association’s commitment to libraries that “enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.”

Mission

Jefferson College Library is committed to providing materials, services, and spaces that are necessary for Jefferson College to fulfill its mission of delivering quality learning opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their goals.

Along with the College, we strive to inspire our community to explore, develop, and engage in innovative learning experiences in a supportive and inclusive environment.

In alliance with the American Library Association and the Association of College and Research Libraries, we embrace intellectual freedom; we strive to protect privacy; and, we work promote and assist with the development of  lifelong learning mindsets and 21st Century literacy skills.

Values

We support Jefferson College and its role in providing an environment dedicated to education, civic engagement, economic opportunities and lifelong learning. We value success, accessibility, integrity, learning, and service, and we work with the broader campus community to promote these values through our collections, services, programming, and practices.

Objectives

To accomplish our mission Jefferson College Library Staff will strive to:

  • Create an environment dedicated to academic research, scholarly thought, personal enrichment and the promotion of cultural awareness
  • Provide and preserve materials of high quality and diverse perspectives in a variety of formats
  • Administer policies that ensure equal access to all members of the community,  promote intellectual freedom, protect patron privacy, and provide a safe environment
  • Develop and provide instruction that helps our community to improve critical thinking skills and strengthen all forms of literacy.
  • Anticipate, identify and meet the information and knowledge needs of our community in a dynamically evolving world

Library Decorum

In order to provide equitable library services for our diverse community we expect all library visitors to exercise appropriate decorum while using library spaces, materials, and services.

In addition to obeying all local, state, and federal laws, library visitors are expected to follow Jefferson College campus policies, and engage in behaviors that allow the library to function as a space dedicated to learning and enrichment. Some important guidelines are listed below. Ask library staff if further clarification is needed.

  • No loud conversations, music from headphones, etc...
  • Collaborative work allowed in designated areas
  • Smoking or use of tobacco products is prohibited at Jefferson College
  • Gambling is prohibited at Jefferson College
  • Food is allowed in collaborative space without carpet
  • Animals must follow campus guidelines
  • Solicitations are not permitted
  • Computer and Technology Policies must be followed
  • Student Handbook expectations must be followed
